Des Rocs stopped off at the Bodega in Nottingham on 17th January 2024. Coming all the way from New York as part of the ‘Dream Machine’ tour, a night filled with rock music, in a sold out room, did not disappoint.
Starting off the set with ‘Dream Machine’ created an anticipated build. He entered the stage decked out in full leather and a huge grin. Just one minute in the lyrics ‘are you ready?’ hit and it was clear from the energised reaction - everyone was absolutely ready.
Quickly jumping into ‘Wayne’ the high powered nature of the track was only amplified live. Continuing to electrify the room. The cleverly curated set allowed them to pull it back in for ‘in the night’ a showcase of impressive and moving vocals.
By this point in the set, the leather sleeves had been removed and the film ‘Saltburn’ had been discussed twice, a slight fear for the English created by the film earned a room full of amusement.
Des Rocs not only delivered powerful rock music but had sentimental moments which captivated the audience. Around mid set he took a moment and asked everyone to close their eyes and picture their dream life alongside a personal anecdote. A beautiful way to hold onto a moment followed by ‘Manic Memories’ was an emotional and stand out moment in the set.
Mentioning that the Bodega stage was amongst the smallest Des Rocs had played that did not stop him making the most of the little room he had. Frequently jumping and venturing to the edge of the stage. Causing me and others at the front to duck to avoid being hit in the head with a guitar - just adding to the intimacy of the room.
‘MMC’ was a clear favourite, the animated feeling of the track was fun and had the crowd chanting at the end.
Finally was ‘Suicide Romantics’ dialling it back with more isolated vocals before the instrumental was a beautiful way to end.
Des Rocs are no strangers to hard hitting drums and powerful riffs and live these shined through even more, bringing new life to all the songs. With such a charismatic stage presence it’s clear he is made for the stage and was delighted to be there reflecting in the room. An interesting, lively, impressive set created high spirits. Des Rocs had an incredible live experience, I highly recommend you catch them on tour if you can.
