HERTZ recently released a stand-alone single ‘Drowning’. They are a band from South Wales, their sound having a nostalgic feeling of 2000’s emo and alternative music with a little bit of a modern spin. Their Debut EP ‘School for Hypocrites’ came out in 2022 and their latest release, as mentioned ‘Drowning’ was released on 25th August 2023.

Cutting lyrics start the song, melancholic instrumentals running alongside. The drums build to the chorus, almost desperate sounding vocals are powerful and emphasise the vulnerability of the lyrics.
The second verse perfectly ties in with the first using another personal anecdote, again very personal to the band. This verse discusses the struggles of epilepsy and difficulty sleeping, an authentic, moving verse with admirable vocals. Guitar and drums add the steady feeling to the song drawing us back into the chorus.
The layered vocals continue to add depth to the single. A small instrumental break was well timed before coming back in at full force.

This single has been produced beautifully and all elements combined to create an expressive and gripping track. The band didn’t shy away from difficult topics such as a battle with depression but instead used their talent and creativity to express it. This is a deeply personal, touching and emotional song.
