The Birmingham based When Tigers Used to Smoke Released their 3rd Ep, ‘There I Almost am’ last year (December 2022) and its definitely one you should take a listen to. Its creative, cohesive and has 6 perfectly crafted songs.
The EP begins with ‘Messing with my heart’ the opening consisting of nearly a minute of peaceful instrumental, including steady guitar and well accompanied drums. The lyrics start, flowing well into groovy instrumental breaks between verses adding depth and capturing your attention right from the start.
‘Gull Rocks’ is next, with a fitting start where additions of birds and a weather forecast can be heard. This sets the mood and adds to the summery feel of the EP. The steady song ends with the same subtle bird noises tying it all together.
Following this is ‘Hesitate’ which takes on an indie pop feel, it flows well, the collection of instrumentals and layered vocals before the isolated vocals hit in the bridge draws you in making for a captivating song.
The next two tracks continue with the same creativity. ‘My Days for You’ starts with a unique collection of instruments and ‘What a way’ brings in more elements of indie rock through the drums.
Finally, is ‘4/4’ when the drums and vocals kick in this song takes on more of a melancholic tone than some of the previous ones on the EP. It’s a great way to end the album with guitar driving the powerful instrumental ending before it slowly comes to a close.
Overall, this EP has used elements to create a cohesive yet unique sounding track list with clear creativity. It’s a great release highlighting the bands talent.
